Green Bay Packers

Gordon Union has been writing regular columns about the Green Bay Packers at his website, Meat Packers Union ( www.meatpackersunion.com). Mr. Union combines years of wisdom with plain talk and

Roger Goodell has reinstated Brett Favre so he is now able to head to Packers camp. According to various sources he will report Monday around noon. I am sure their will be a media frenzy around this. Favre is still considering two options that the Packers have offered and that is a 20 plus million to go back into retirement or a seat on the bench.

retire especially if he can still lead your team into the playoffs? Well, that is exactly what the Green Bay Packers are doing with Brett Favre. They have offered him a 20 million dollar package to basically stay retired and go away. Now isn't that a way to treat a guy who has brought you a championship. I guess loyalty is out the window in this situation.

Since the latest Brett Favre vs. Green Bay Packers, et al, conflict began, I've held my peace, hoping that amid all the negative press Favre has received, one positive, shining light might emerge. But, alas, that has not happened. So I'm obliged to agree with most of my  media cohorts and side with the Packers' GM, President, and coach, all in the general interest of the TEAM and FANS.

Why is that whenever someone retires or is having a great career, the first question we all ask is, “where does he rank among the all-time greats?”  Why must we always be looking at the historic side of things?  LeBron is not the next Michael Jordan and we don’t know if he will be a better all-time player so why worry about it.  Can’t we just enjoy LeBron for what he is?  Alex Rodriguez is on pace to break every major home run record but I don’t understand why we always have to look at the big picture.  From now on I am going to watch A-Rod for today and that’s all.  When he hits a homer I am not going to wonder if that was 530 or 531 for his career, I will only care about it how many he has hit that season and if it helped the Yankees win.  That is why I will not worry where Brett Favre ranks among the best quarterbacks in NFL history.  No, I will just remember the career of Brett because whether you think he is better than John Elway or not you must admit, he was special.

During its nearly 90 years of existence, the Green Bay Packers have come and gone through some mighty memorable eras. Like, for instance the Lambeau and Lombardi-Starr eras. And now, one of the longest and most successful eras, that of Brett Favre, has ended, much to his fans' surprise and disappointment.

One overriding topic of conversation this week in Packer Country has been the bone-chilling forecast for Sunday's NFC Championship battle with the New York Giants. Historically, the uglier the weather, the greater the Packers' success stories. Like following last Saturday's defeat of the Seahawks, Packer players claimed they enjoyed the experience of playing in the snow, quipping it was "fun". And Coach McCarthy is not so much concerned about the frigid temps as the wind factor (but this time he probably won't need to worry, since the game will be played after sunset, when winds theoretically should have died down).

After watching Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers kick the Seattle Seahawks to the curb in a snowstorm it makes you wonder if this Packers team could actually beat New England. Now these upstart Packers are young, but they have a General who leads them into battle and his name is Brett Favre. Every now and than you can see the battle scars on him, but like any good General he leads the troops to victory. Favre is this kind of leader.
