pros and cons on both sides as to whether it's a good idea for Cup drivers to also race in the Nationwide Series. Some argue that the Cup drivers "steal the show", not to mention points from Nationwide drivers. Others claim that racing with the top drivers gives the Nationwide drivers valuable experience. And some believe more fans will attend Nationwide races or tune into the TV broadcasts just to see the "stars" compete.

Seven Nationwide Series teams (including Dale Jr.'s No. 5) were penalized for various equipment rule violations. Jr. lost 50 championship driver points, and car owner Rick Hendrick was docked 50 championship owner points.

For the past few seasons, Hendrick Motorsports has dominated in NASCAR victory lane. And with the addition of Dale Jr. to the Hendrick fold, few expected that pattern would change this year. Initially, things were going as planned--Jr. taking the Bud Shootout and then winning the first Gatorade 150 qualifying race.
